1. “Yoga Nidra” by Swami Satyananda Saraswati:
Swami Satyananda Saraswati’s seminal work lays the foundation for understanding the depths of Yoga Nidra. This is the classical ‘base book’ that all Yoga Nidra teachers are taught. It has detailed instructions and philosophical insights as Swami Saraswati invites readers to explore the boundless potential of consciousness. This classic text serves as a timeless guide for awakening to one’s true self and experiencing profound inner peace and has a wealth of data extracted as a result of scientific experiments conducted on the varied aspects of the practice.
What I found interesting about “Yoga Nidra” by Swami Satyananda Saraswati ?
It’s a great Mind Programming Technique! Swami Satyananda’s research, including his own experiments, resonated with me. I learnt Yoga Nidra from the Bihar school under Swami Satyananda and was one of my most enriching experience. For instance, his concept of Sankalpa (positive intention) during Yoga Nidra helped me improve my focus and sleep quality. This is covered in detail in the book.

What I found interesting from Kamini Desai’s book?
I found her commentary as a seasoned clinical psychologist and her reflections on the limitations of traditional therapy very insightful.
She recounts a young patient who understood her situation but couldn’t break the cycle, and a veteran struggling despite medication and therapy. These experiences highlight the limitations of focusing solely on understanding the “why” or changing thought patterns.
The book introduces Yoga Nidra as a potential alternative. Unlike traditional approaches, Yoga Nidra is believed to directly address physiological responses, leading to actual change without needing to revisit the past.
